Listing terms for makers and shops

What makers and shops agree to when their patches are listed in The Black Thread's patch library, how listings are labelled and ordered, and how to remove them.

Last updated

These terms apply when a maker or shop has patches listed in The Black Thread's patch library. "We" and "us" mean The Black Thread, as section 1 of the terms of use explains. "You" means the maker or shop. The terms of use cover everything else on the site.

1. What the library is

The library is a free directory of patches for battle jackets and vests. People can find patches by band, genre, theme, type and size, and try them on a jacket in the builder at their real size. Every patch links to the shop that sells it.

We don't sell your patches, take payment or take a cut. People buy from your shop, on your terms. Listing is free at the moment. If that ever changes, section 9 applies.

2. How your patches get listed

For now, you get in touch with us and we add your patches. You send us a spreadsheet of your patches, or the address of your shop, and tell us which of them to list. We prepare the listings: we may cut out the background of your photos, resize them, and tidy titles so the band, design, size and type read the same way across the library.

3. What you let us do

You let us show your patch photos (including the cut-out versions we make), titles, sizes, types and shop links on The Black Thread: in the library, in the builder, and in link previews when someone shares a library page. You also let us show them in our own posts about The Black Thread on social media, where we name your shop.

This permission (a licence) is free, worldwide and non-exclusive. It covers only what's needed for those uses, and it ends when your listings are removed. People who have already placed one of your patches in their own saved design keep it in that design.

4. What you confirm

By having your patches listed, you confirm that:

  • you're allowed to sell what you list, and to let us show the photos;
  • you've told us which patches are official (made under licence from the band), which are unofficial (fan-made or unlicensed) and which are your own designs;
  • your listings are legal where you sell them.

If we get a detail wrong, such as a size, a label or a link, tell us and we'll fix it. You're responsible for your patches, prices, delivery, customer service and the law that applies to your sales. We're not part of any sale.

5. Labels

Every band patch carries one of three labels:

  • Official: made under licence from the band.
  • Unofficial: fan-made or unlicensed.
  • Unverified: we don't know whether it's licensed.

Patches that aren't about a band carry the label Original design. A band patch gets the Official label only when you, or your shop listing, say it's licensed. Until then it's Unverified.

6. How the library is ordered

Band pages list Official patches first, then Original designs, then Unverified and Unofficial patches. Within each group, the newest come first. Search results follow the same order after matching what was searched for.

Nobody pays for a better place, and we don't take money to rank anything. If that ever changes, we'll update this section and tell you first, as section 9 explains.

7. Removing listings

You can ask us to remove any of your listings, or all of them, at any time. Email mail@bogdan-pop.com. We act within 72 hours, usually sooner.

We can remove a listing too, for example after a complaint from a rights holder, when its shop link stops working, or when it breaks these terms. When we do, we tell you which listing and why, unless the law stops us or it's spam. You can reply, and we'll look at it again.

If we stop listing your shop altogether, we give you 30 days' notice and our reasons, unless the law requires us to act sooner or you've seriously or repeatedly broken these terms.

If someone complains that a listing infringes their rights, section 7 of the terms of use explains how complaints and counter-notices work.

8. Your shop's details

Your maker page shows your shop's name, the country it ships from, a link to your shop and your listed patches. We don't publish your email address. If your shop trades under your own name, that name is personal data, and our privacy policy explains how we handle it.

9. Changes

If we change these terms, we'll email you at least 15 days before the change takes effect, unless the law requires a change sooner. If you don't agree with a change, ask us to remove your listings before it takes effect.

10. The rest

The liability, law and courts sections of the terms of use (sections 10 and 12) apply to these terms too. We don't promise any number of visits or sales.
